An 8.9 earthquake hit Japan this morning, and the tsunami that followed has killed thousands and wiped out whole communities. Just now they are reporting that there have been 87 aftershocks. All around the Pacific rim, people are waiting in fear to see if they will have tsunamis crashing into their shores. Watching the videos of the earthquake on television, I couldn’t help but have tears well up in my eyes as I saw people running, terrified, away from buildings that were crumbling. Because we are all connected, and in fact, are all just extensions of the same universal energy, what impacts one affects us all.
When so many millions are suffering, terrified, hurting, how can we not all feel the tremors of the universal energy field as they ripple out from those in the centre of the catastrophe.
We all connect with the pain and the fear that those in Japan are feeling. Then I wondered what would be of most value? Of course, real concrete help–getting involved in any humanitarian efforts, contributing to fundraising to help those affected–is important, but I’m thinking about it at a more metaphysical level.
Does it really help those who are suffering when we watch in horror and cry and talk in hushed voices about how awful it is? Or is it better to send calming, loving energy instead? We must remember that our thoughts are energy and that we have the power to send that energy and affect the well-being of our fellow travellers in this life. It’s an awesome power and an awesome responsibility. At this time more than ever we need to be aware of that power and use it for good.
I suggest that rather than letting the terrible events on the other side of the world drag us down into the same horror and sadness, we can do more good by connecting with our universal selves and sending thoughts and energy of love, healing and calmness.
So I will take time throughout my day to sit in meditation and focus on sending love, peace and healing to my brothers and sisters who are affected by the earthquake.
